The Canadian Press TORONTO — The Ontario government says it is delaying the appointment of the man set to become the province’s top cop until an investigation into allegations of political interference in the hiring process is complete. Community Safety Minister Sylvia Jones says the government will respect Ron Taverner’s request for a delay in his appointment, which was supposed to take place on Monday. Taverner, a longtime family friend of Premier Doug Ford, did not initially qualify for the role, but the government has admitted that it lowered the requirements for the job to attract a wider range of candidates.Sources in the premier’s office say that until a review is complete, Acting OPP Commissioner Brad Blair will be replaced at the helm of the OPP by Gary Couture, who is currently the force’s deputy commissioner.On Friday, Blair asked the courts to order Ontario Ombudsman Paul Dube to investigate Taverner’s hiring, after the ombudsman declined his request to carry out the probe.The Ford government has repeatedly denied that the premier’s office had anything to do with Taverner’s hiring.Taverner did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the delay, which he requested in an email to Jones.“Out of the greatest of respect for the brave men and women of the Ontario Provincial Police, I am requesting my appointment as commissioner be postponed until as such time the integrity commissioner has completed his review,” he wrote in the email.

After finishing her freshman season by being named the Big Ten Player of the Year, Big Ten individual champion and honorable mention All-American, Porvasnik went on to qualify for the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open in May.“Something that I want to do one day is definitely go play in the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) tour so it was really cool to play with some of the people I’ve always looked up to and get the experience,” Porvasnik said.Porvasnik’s coach sees Porvasnik playing on tour one day, too. Coach Therese Hession said she is excited to see a glimpse of what the future may hold for the Hinckley, Ohio, native. “I got to see her the second round (at the U.S. Open). She just looked like she belonged,” Hession said. “I know she even made a comment to her mom saying, ‘Three years from now, this will be my job.’”Porvasnik said, though, she doesn’t plan on leaving OSU any sooner than three years.“It’s like a thought but it would never happen. My mom is the one who says ‘No, you’re getting your degree before you leave,’ so no, it would probably never happen,” she said.Senior teammate Claudia Lim also said she believes Porvasnik will play with the professionals one day.“She’ll play on the LPGA tour, for sure,” Lim said. “She has the potential and all the characteristics to be a great leader.” Now that Porvasnik is back from playing the fairways of Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C., at the U.S. Women’s Open, she is ready to chase a collegiate championship with her teammates. She was one of the 42 women named on the Big Ten Women’s Golfers to Watch List this season, along with teammates redshirt-sophomore Zoe-Beth Brake and sophomore Katja Pogacar. “For the team, I know our goal is to definitely do really well in the Big Ten again and individually. I had a really good year last year, so I want to improve on that this year,” Porvasnik said. Hession said she is expecting to see a great season from Porvasnik as well, and she hopes that the sophomore will take her experiences from the summer to lead her team. “This summer she got to play with the best in the world at the U.S. Open. I think she’ll draw on those experiences and now she knows more what to expect in college golf,” Hession said.Porvasnik is scheduled to start her sophomore season as a Buckeye on Monday when OSU is set to play in the Chip-N-Club Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. The tournament is scheduled to last through Tuesday.

The Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) in Atlanta.The Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) in Atlanta recently appointed three African American faculty members to department chairs related to their field of study, effective July 1.Dr. Janice Herbert-Carter, an associate professor at the school, was appointed chairperson of the department of medical education at MSM. In her new role, she is charged with working to advance the department’s academic courses as well as expanding interdisciplinary education in the M.D. program by collaborating with other MSM educational initiatives.According to a MSM press release, Herbert-Carter will continue her roles as the associate professor of medical education and also an associate professor of family medicine. She is a graduate of Princeton University in biochemistry and Afro-American Studies. Herbert-Carter earned her medical degree from Howard University College of medicine, where she also completed her internship and residency in internal medicine.Dr. Winston E. Thompson was named chairperson of MSM’s department of physiology. In his role, according to the press release, he will be the spokesperson for the department faculty, staff, and students. Thompson received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Lafayette College in Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in cell and developmental biology from Rutgers University.The Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) in AtlantaDr. Yasmin Tyler-Hill will serve as chairperson of the department of pediatrics. She is also charged with collaborating and seeking partners to build the department of developmental and behavioral pediatrics and enhance programs in community and general pediatrics, adolescent medicine, and the care and transition of care of children with hemoglobinopathies.Tyler-Hill graduated from Princeton University with a degree in biology. She went on to receive her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and completed her internship and residency at Boston City Hospital, now Boston University Medical Center.She joined MSM faculty as the assistant professor of clinical pediatrics in 2001 and later stepped into the associate professor position in 2009.
Kolkata: Fire broke out at the first floor of Priya Cinema Hall, one of the premier movie theatres of the city, at around 10:15 pm on Sunday. According to initial reports, the heater of a momo counter has been said to be the cause behind the mishap.Five fire engines rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control. The owner of the theatre Arijit Dutta, along with four of his family members were rescued from the building. Rescue work is still underway. However, no casualties have been reported as of now. Mayor Sovan Chatterjee visited the spot soon after the incident and surveyed the area and the extent of damage.Preliminary investigation has revealed that the momo counter which caught fire, did not have enough fire extinguishers in supply. A forensic team is likely to visit the spot on Monday morning.
Liberty Global has named Frans-Willem de Kloet as the new CEO of UPC Czech Republic, replacing Vaclav Barton, who is retiring.De Kloet is currently director of business services for Liberty Global Europe, responsible for all business-to-business activities. Prior to joining Liberty Global he held senior positions at Hewlett Packard, KPN and MCI/Verizon.Barton has served as CEO of UPC Czech Republic since 2002.
UK consumers will spend more money on SVOD services and film and TV downloads than on buying and renting DVDs for the first time this year, according to Strategy Analytics.The research firm predicts that consumers in the UK will spend £1.31 billion on streaming and downloading in 2016 compared to £956 million on DVDs and Blu-rays.The figures mark a 23.7% year-on-year increase in digital spend and a 16.3% decline in physical media spend, with DVD sales tipped to drop below £1 billion for the first time since 1994.“Five years ago, DVDs represented 86% of consumer spend on home video, in five years it will be less than 14%, with DVD/Blu-ray rental virtually extinct,” said Strategy Analytics’ digital media director, Michael Goodman.“As online provides increasing ways to access films and box-sets, physical simply can’t compete. Although many people will always prefer a physical disc, retailers will have to decide whether it’s even viable to offer that format in five years’ time.”According to the research, streaming subscription service, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are the fastest-growing format with spend on these services to rise 36% to £742 million this year.Strategy Analytics estimates there are around 4.6 million Netflix and 2.5 million Amazon Prime households in the UK, and claims that around 20% of SVOD households subscribe to at least two services.“Video streaming subscriptions will be the dominant format from 2017 onwards and will account for over half of consumer home video spend by the end of 2021,” said the report.Overall, online formats will account for 58% of home video spend this year, compared to 42% for DVDs. The £2.27 billion Britons will spend on home video is a 3% rise on 2015 and the equivalent of £6.63 per household a month.
Angel Ruiz presenting the new brandEricsson Media Solutions is rebranding as MediaKind.Speaking at a press event in London, Arun Bhikshesvaran, chief marketing officer, Ericsson Media Solutions, said that “today marks a very important occasion for us”.The media technology outfit is currently undergoing a ‘carve out’ process that will see Ericsson divest a 51% majority stake in it to private-equity outfit One Equity Partners, a move that executives now expect to be completed in Q3.Bhikshesvaran said that the MediaKind brand reflected the company’s DNA. “We took a lot of input from our employee base. We asked them if we were an automobile what should we be. The answer was a hybrid and Media and Kind coming together is also kind of a hybrid,” he said.MediaKind CEO Angel Ruiz said that Ericsson had decided to carve out its media business some 16 months ago. “This history of our new company goes back some 12 years when Tandberg Television was acquired by Ericsson,” he said.Ruiz said that the new company would operate in “a very competitive space” and would require R&D investment to prosper through innovation.Ruiz said that Ericsson had spent US$3 billion on the portfolio of assets that are going into MediaKind. He said that the new company had “a gold presence” in the market with some 900 customers today.“We have a combination of media and mobility that I don’t think anyone else in the market has today,” said Ruiz, adding that Ericsson’s legacy in mobile telecoms would continue to be an important asset for the company going forwards.“With media today being very heavily entertainment based, just think about the number of mobile devices that are out there,” he said, outlining a vision where people could consume entertainment seamlessly on the move and shifting from screen to screen as they enter their homes.MediaKind’s management team will include Gowton Achaibar as COO and head of R&D. Achaibar has strong mobility experience, said Ruiz.Mark Russell will serve as CTO.Bhikshesvaran, also with strong mobility experience, will head up marketing.Former Imagine Communications executive Misty Kawecki from Imagine will serve as CFO.Sales will be led by Ken Yap in South-East Asia, Alex Borland in EMEA, Clayton Cruz in Latin America and Steve Payn in North America. Svven Bolthausen will have the role of SVP, commercial management and sales support, and Heather Andrade-Neumann will be in charge of human resources.Bhikshesvaran said that MediaKind counts nine out of ten global telecom operators, cable operators and satellite operators and eight out of the top 10 media and broadcast companies, as customers.Companies acquired by Ericsson that have gone in to make up the new outfit include Tandberg Television, HyCGRoup, Fabrix, Microsoft Mediaroom, Envivio, Azuki and Aspex.MediaKind serves 18 million pay TV subscribers in 26 countries and supports media delivery to over one billion homes, dealing with three million video assets daily and 200 Petabytes of time-shifted storage.Bhikshesvaran said the company would look at adjacent markets to entertainment such as smart cities and the Internet of Things for growth.Ruiz said that city officials all over the world are interested in how video is going to help deliver the smart city and smart services of the future. “From our perspective, being media and video focused means being entertainment focused. But when you talk about where video is in 2025, the amount of video that will not be entertainment but will be about safety and security and city administration will be phenomenal,” he said.Platforms like Ericsson’s video storage and processing along with analytics will be central to delivering this, he said.On Ericsson’s own strategy, Ruiz said that there is an intersection between mobile and video and it makes sense for Ericsson to continue to hold a 49% stake. However, he said that when Ericsson’s new management started to look at the investments it had made in video, executives had been concerned about the fragmentation of the market, particularly in segments such as video compression and processing.He alluded to the fact that One Equity Partners has done a number of acquisitions, is a long-term investor, and suggested that it would be in a good place to drive this consolidation.Within its entertainment market, Ruiz said that MediaKind remained focused on MediaFirst, its flagship platform both for OTT TV and traditional pay TV.Borland meanwhile said that “OTT is a very big part of our future”, adding that MediaFirst would be “very focused on the OTT space going forwards”.Commenting on the rebrand, Paolo Pescatore, technology, media and telecoms analyst, said: “Finally, the unit can get on it with business. This represents a new start and it must deliver. No more second chances. Arguably, the unit should be well placed to exploit the opportunities in convergence underpinned by the growing demand of video usage. The equity firm can ensure a commercially minded focus, while it can still rely on Ericsson’s vast technical expertise and huge connections to thrive.“There will be obstacles that it still needs to overcome. In particular regaining trust among existing and new customers. The new brand and future plans will go some way to restore confidence and rebuild credibility with the burgeoning media and telco industries.”
