I found a great article posted on the Syndicom Web site from CIO magazine on how to develop an online community. Here are four points I pulled out that relate to content publishers: 1. Design for EvolutionBecause communities of practice are organic, designing them is more a matter of shepherding their evolution than creating them from scratch. As the community grows, new members bring new interests and may pull the focus of the community in different directions.2. Open a Dialog Between Inside and Outside Effective community design is built on the collective experience of community members. Only an insider can appreciate the issues at the heart of the domain, the knowledge that is important to share, the challenges his field faces, and the latent potential in emerging ideas and techniques. Only an insider can know who the real players are and their relationships. Good community design requires an understanding of the community’s potential to develop and steward knowledge, but it often takes an outside perspective to help members see the possibilities3. Invite Different Levels of ParticipationPeople participate in communities for different reasons. We commonly see three main levels of community participation. The first is a small core group of people who actively participate in discussions. As the community matures, this core group takes on much of the community’s leadership. But this group is usually rather small, only 10 percent to 15 percent of the whole community. At the next level outside this core is the active group. These members attend meetings regularly and participate occasionally in the community forums, but without the regularity or intensity of the core group. The active group is also quite small, another 15 percent to 20 percent of the community. A large portion of community members are peripheral and rarely participate. Instead, they keep to the sidelines, watching the interaction of the core and active members4. Focus on ValueValue is key to community life because participation in most communities is voluntary. But the full value of a community is often not apparent when it is first formed. Moreover, the source of value often changes during the life of the community. Communities need to create events, activities and relationships that help their potential value emerge and enable them to discover new ways to harvest it rather than attempting to determine their expected value in advance. Columbia Journalism Review announced that it will reduce its print issues from a bimonthly schedule to two issues per year, citing a need to redistribute resources between its print and digital platforms. “The cost savings—in production, mailing, art and design and just everyone’s time—are significant,” Spayd tells Folio:. “I’d say it comes between a third and half of our budget. I’m pumped up about the idea of taking those marbles and moving them over to the digital side.” With its reduced schedule, the print format will also take on a slightly modified focus, although Spayd promises that the non-profit magazine’s goals of providing high-quality watchdog coverage of the journalism industry will be unchanged. Instead of selections of several types of pieces, the two annual issues—one each in the Spring and Fall—will focus on singular, idea-driven, fundamental-to-journalism themes, says Spayd. In a letter to readers posted on CJR.org, editor-in-chief Elizabeth Spayd announced plans to boost investment in the magazine’s online operations in response to its increasingly digital audience. While print readers have steadily declined, Spayd writes, visitors to CJR.org have increased 35 percent. Spayd tells Folio: that there will be no layoffs or staff cuts involved with the transition. Columbia Journalism Review will debut in its new format in Spring 2016. “We went to two print issues because we think it’s possible at that pace to make them truly special, more ambitious and more high-concept than the ones we could manage or afford on a bimonthly basis,” Spayd continues. “Rather, we’re rethinking most everyone’s job and how we can position everyone toward digital in the smartest way.”

The system is called Lane Hazard Warning, and unlike a lot of V2V systems, this one just completed its second successful real-world test, the two companies announced today.The first real-world test of the Lane Hazard Warning system took place in Tsukuba City, Japan, in winter 2018. The second test took place in Southern California and concluded at the end of April. Pretty cool, but what exactly does the system do?First, Lane Hazard Warning uses a vehicle’s sensors to identify potential road hazards such as wrecked cars, big potholes and slippery surfaces. It then flags those hazards and which lane or lanes they affect and sends that data to the cloud where other vehicles equipped with the system can access it.”When something unusual happens on the road ahead drivers often have very little time to react, and that can put them and their passengers at risk,” Hiroshi Onishi, executive officer and group president of Automotive Equipment at Mitsubishi Electric, said in a statement. “Together with Here Technologies, we’ve developed a new system designed to give drivers a few valuable extra seconds or minutes to prepare for a potential danger on the road ahead, such as by switching lanes or simply driving with greater caution. “The two companies are planning to make the system available to automakers for testing, with the ultimate goal being to license the technology out to companies developing self-driving cars or vehicles with advanced driver assistance features. The Sri Lankan government believes a local Islamist extremist group called the National Thowheeth Jama’ath (NTJ) was behind the deadly suicide bomb attacks that killed nearly 300 people, government spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said Monday.Senaratne, who is also a cabinet minister, added that the government was investigating whether the group had “international support”.”We don’t see that only a small organisation in this country can do all that,” he said.”We are now investigating the international support for them, and their other links, how they produced the suicide bombers here, and how they produced bombs like this.”Documents seen by AFP show Sri Lanka’s police chief issued a warning on 11 April, saying that a “foreign intelligence agency” had reported NTJ was planning attacks on churches and the Indian high commission.Not much is known about the NTJ, a radical Muslim group that has been linked to the vandalising of Buddhist statues.A police source told AFP that all 24 people in custody in connection with the attacks belong to an “extremist” group, but did not specify further.
London: Contrary to the popular believe that people tend to be more satisfied after an increase in their wage, a new study suggests that it may be temporary and not have a persistent effect on job satisfaction. The result indicates that wage increases in small, but regular increments – rather than less frequent but higher increases that add up to an equivalent amount – are the most effective way to motivate employees in the long run.For this study, published in the Journal of Economic Behaviour and Organisation, almost 33,500 observations were analysed; with the majority of individuals indicating a job satisfaction of seven on a zero to 10 scale. However, the rise in job satisfaction after a wage increase is only temporary, as the effect almost fades out within four years.According to behavioural-economic theory, this can be explained by the fact that people do not evaluate their income in absolute terms, but rather in relation to their previous income.Furthermore, people adapt to their new wage level over time, so a higher salary becomes new reference point for future comparisons. Also, negative reactions to wage cuts were also temporary, a finding that researchers again explain with reference point adaptations and social comparisons.

But at this year’s 35th anniversary of Expotur, one of the most important travel marts in Latin America, the focus was on showcasing new consumer offerings.“We are very proud of what we have accomplished as a tourist destination,” said Maria Amalia Revelo, Costa Rica’s Minister of Tourism, during a press conference. But, she added, “we know we still have a lot of work to do.”Organized by the Costa Rican Association of Professionals in Tourism (ACOPROT), this year’s travel mart featured 230 purchasers with delegates from 35 countries, showcasing many of the country’s micro, small and mid-size businesses.The U.S. and Canada are considered priority markets, bringing in the highest number of tourists, though ACOPROT is further developing the European market, as well as the South American countries of Chile, Argentina and Brazil. As the gateway to Costa Rica’s Gulf Islands, it’s only a 90-minute drive from the capital, San Jose.Billy Johnson, marketing manager of Vista Los Suenos Adventure Park, was at Expotur promoting the Central Pacific region, which he says has a lot of offer Canadians. While there’s much to see in the popular tourist destinations of Costa Rica, he believes the central Pacific Coast is an untapped region, and in the past year his company started offering day tours (with a choice of activities) directly from San Jose.The adventure park offers ziplining, ATVing and horseback riding, but it’s only three kilometres from the beach so visitors can also take surf lessons. “That’s very different than going to a place in the mountains because you only will be doing those [mountain] activities,” said Johnson.Aside from soft adventure, the central Pacific Coast is quieter, naturally lending itself to nature-based resorts and activities. In Puntarenas, for example, there are plenty of wildlife sanctuaries — but without the crowds and long queues.Outside the city of Puntarenas, for example, is Natuwa Wildlife Sanctuary, which rescues, rehabilitates and releases scarlet and great green macaws back into the wild. But it also provides refuge for other animals, such as monkeys, tapirs, ocelots and sloths, many of which eventually return to their natural habitat. These species live in the wild, but the refuge is managed sustainably to protect threatened and endangered forested habitats, such as mangroves and tropical forests.There are several walking trails throughout Curú, ranging from easy to difficult; Sendero Finca de Los Monos is considered one of the best trails for spotting birds and small mammals.The region also offers Costa Rica’s only private-island resort, located in the Gulf of Nicoya. Isla Chiquita is a glamping resort with 15 tent suites and one new master tent suite that opened in February. The resort works with Canadian travel agents and offers meal plans, according to resident manager Jason Barahona.Isla Chiquita is designed as a back-to-nature getaway with no motorized vehicles and access to eco-adventures on land and sea, from ocean kayaking to artisan fishing, sunset cruising and beach hopping. But it can also accommodate groups and even corporate events.Back on the peninsula is Tambor Tropical, an adults-only boutique beach resort that offers a quiet escape on Tambor Bay — one of the country’s premiere bird-watching locales.“The advantage of being a small destination is we can still locally try to build it without having anything too large,” said general manager Juan Carlos Cruz. Activities include bird-watching and a turtle rescue program. “We have released over the last two years 17,000 baby turtles, so we’re trying to do activities that are nature-oriented, but they also have to be feasible [for the local community].”Expotur takes place annually; this year, the travel mart received a certificate of carbon neutrality for the fourth consecutive year.
